When is the last time you negotiated?

We'd be willing to bet it was sometime today.

Negotiation is something we all do - like it or not - all day.

Essentially, negotiation is getting to a mutually agreeable conclusion. Technically, according to Merriam-Webster®, to negotiate is:

1 a : to deal with (some matter or affair that requires ability for its successful handling) : MANAGE b : to arrange for or bring about through conference, discussion, and compromise <negotiate a treaty>

So let's ask the question again... when is the last time you negotiated?

  • turning off the alarm clock
  • getting the kids fed & off to school
  • moving safely through traffic
  • calling out to have the elevator held
  • getting messages from your assistant
  • achieving consensus on a new marketing campaign during a production meeting
  • deciding where to go to lunch with the other department managers
  • closing a new client deal after a lengthy courting process

  • asking for a promotion
  • signing a new salary contract
  • deciding the date for the shareholder's picnic
  • scheduling a staff meeting (that people will actually attend)
  • transferring an employee to a different department (please!)
  • hiring a new manager
  • outsourcing payroll to a new company after feeling you did not get a satisfactory ROI on the last payroll outsourcing contract
  • contracting a new service vendor
  • upgrading office software and requiring a multi-user license that didn't already exist under the provider's terms
  • getting out of the office at a reasonable time so you can get home for dinner so your family remembers who you are...

These are all things that require negotiation to some degree.
